Strategic foresight emerged in the mid-20th century, when governments and large organizations began experimenting with scenario planning to navigate complex global shifts. In the 1950s and 60s, long-range forecasting studies helped leaders anticipate technological disruption, demographic change, and geopolitical uncertainty. Corporations soon adopted similar practices, using foresight to choose strategic directions before change arrived at their doorstep.

As the field matured, foresight evolved from a top-down exercise into a more collaborative discipline. Instead of relying on predictions from a single expert group, organizations began gathering insights from across departments, increasing perspectives to maximize data points which impact future plans. This evolution led to the rise of “futures literacy,” the ability to interpret weak signals of change, imagine multiple scenarios, and prepare for shifts before they appear.

In today’s fast-moving environment shaped by AI, automation, and global interdependence, this long view is indispensable. Foresight is not about guaranteeing a single future, but reducing blind spots, understanding emerging patterns, and strengthening organizations’ capabilities to address future challenges.
